Understanding Browser Fingerprinting

What is Browser Fingerprinting?

Browser fingerprinting is a tracking technique that collects information about your browser configuration and device to create a unique identifier.

Learn More →

Privacy Risks

Websites can track you across sessions without cookies using your unique browser fingerprint. This affects your online privacy and anonymity.

Privacy Guide →

Protection Methods

Use privacy-focused browsers, VPNs, disable WebRTC, and regularly clear browser data to reduce your digital fingerprint uniqueness.

Hide Your Identity →

WebRTC IP Leaks

WebRTC can expose your real IP address even when using a VPN. Check if your browser leaks your local and public IP addresses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a VPN reduce my browser exposure and fingerprinting?

No - VPN does NOT improve your privacy score. Here's why:

What VPN does:

  • ✓ Hides your public IP address (changes the IP shown in Basic Info tab)
  • ✓ Encrypts traffic from ISP/network monitoring
  • ✓ Masks your geographic location

What this tool measures (VPN doesn't help):

  • ✗ Browser fingerprinting (fonts, canvas, WebGL, screen size) - 0 points from VPN
  • ✗ Tracking cookies and third-party storage - 0 points from VPN
  • ✗ Browser settings (Do Not Track, ad blocker) - 0 points from VPN
  • ✗ WebRTC leak test - VPN doesn't disable WebRTC, only masks the leaked IP

To increase your score from 10/100 to 70+:

  • Disable WebRTC completely in browser settings (not just use VPN) - +20 pts
  • Install ad blocker like uBlock Origin - +15 pts
  • Enable Do Not Track in browser settings - +15 pts
  • Block third-party cookies - +10 pts
  • Update browser to latest version - +10 pts
  • Use privacy-focused browser (Brave, Firefox with strict mode) - +25 pts

VPN is important for network privacy and hiding your location from websites, but it won't change your score on this tool.

What is browser fingerprinting and how does it work?

Browser fingerprinting identifies you by collecting dozens of unique characteristics:

  • Screen & Display: Resolution, color depth, pixel ratio
  • Fonts: Installed fonts create unique signatures
  • Canvas & WebGL: How your GPU renders graphics
  • Audio: Audio stack fingerprinting via AudioContext
  • Hardware: CPU cores, memory, battery status
  • Software: Browser version, plugins, timezone, language
  • Behavior: Mouse movements, typing patterns

These combine to create a unique "fingerprint" that tracks you across sites without cookies. Our tool analyzes 25+ vectors to measure your tracking surface.

How is the privacy score calculated?

Your score is calculated from 100 points across 4 categories:

🔧 Browser Hygiene (20 points)

  • Up-to-date browser version: 10 pts
  • Do Not Track enabled: 10 pts

🛡️ Tracker & Cookie Controls (35 points)

  • Ad blocker installed: 15 pts
  • Third-party cookies blocked: 10 pts
  • Storage controls (LocalStorage, SessionStorage, IndexedDB): 10 pts

👤 Fingerprint Surface (25 points)

  • Canvas fingerprinting resistance: 15 pts
  • Privacy-focused browser features: 10 pts

🌐 Network & Leak Tests (20 points)

  • WebRTC completely disabled: 20 pts
  • Note: VPN alone doesn't give points - must disable WebRTC in browser

Score Ranges: 70+ = Hardened | 40-69 = Balanced | 0-39 = Exposed

What are WebRTC leaks and why do they matter?

WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) enables peer-to-peer video/audio in browsers, but it can expose your real IP even through a VPN.

How WebRTC leaks work:

  • JavaScript can query WebRTC APIs to discover your local and public IP addresses
  • This happens before VPN routing, revealing your actual location
  • Websites can de-anonymize VPN users in seconds

Protection methods:

  • Disable WebRTC in browser settings (Firefox: about:config → media.peerconnection.enabled = false)
  • Use WebRTC blocking extensions (WebRTC Leak Prevent, uBlock Origin)
  • Use browsers with built-in protection (Brave, Tor Browser)
  • Check our VPN Detection tool to test for leaks

How can I improve my privacy score from 'Exposed' to 'Hardened'?

Step-by-step improvements (can gain 60-80 points):

  1. Disable WebRTC Completely (+20 pts)

    Firefox: about:config → media.peerconnection.enabled = false
Chrome: Install "WebRTC Leak Prevent" extension
Brave: Settings → Privacy → WebRTC IP Handling → Disable

  2. Install Ad Blocker (+15 pts)

Use uBlock Origin or Privacy Badger to block trackers and ads

  3. Enable Do Not Track (+15 pts)

Chrome: Settings → Privacy → Send Do Not Track request
Firefox: Settings → Privacy → Tell sites not to track

  4. Block Third-Party Cookies (+10 pts)

    Settings → Privacy → Block third-party cookies

  5. Update Browser (+10 pts)

Always run the latest browser version for security patches

  6. Switch to Privacy Browser (+25 pts fingerprint reduction)

Consider Brave, Firefox with Enhanced Tracking Protection, or Tor Browser

  7. Optional: Use VPN (0 pts on this tool, but good for network privacy)

VPN hides your IP from websites but doesn't affect browser fingerprinting score. See our VPN recommendations for network-level privacy

Implementing steps 1-6 can take you from 10/100 (Exposed) to 85+/100 (Hardened).

Does using incognito or private mode improve privacy?

No, incognito mode provides minimal protection.

What incognito DOES:

  • ✓ Clears browsing history after session
  • ✓ Doesn't save cookies locally after closing
  • ✓ Doesn't save form data

What incognito does NOT do:

  • ✗ Hide your IP address from websites
  • ✗ Prevent browser fingerprinting (identical fingerprint in incognito)
  • ✗ Block ISP or network monitoring
  • ✗ Stop website tracking during the session
  • ✗ Improve your privacy score (0 point difference)
